Update January 2021: Disney World has eliminated Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom. The game is no longer available for guests. If a similar game is announced I will share that information with you.
Disney World’s Magic Kingdom has so many rides, characters, and other attractions it is easy to overlook some activities. One of these fun, but often missed activities is Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom.
What is Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom?
Hades wants to take over the Magic Kingdom. He sends Pain and Panic to steal Merlin’s magic crystal which could prevent Hades’ takeover. Pain and Panic bungle the mission and instead break the crystal into 8 pieces that end up scattered throughout Magic Kingdom park.
Now Hades needs to recruit other villains to help him collect the crystal pieces. To thwart his evil plans, Merlin needs new recruits to help him protect the Magic Kingdom. This is where you come in. With just a bit of training you become a Sorcerer of the Magic Kingdom and save the day.
How Do I Start A Game Of Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom?
To begin Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom you’ll head to the Fire Station on Main Street, U.S.A. The Fire Station is next door to City Hall and has a sign on the door, as well as signs nearby, looking for new recruits.
At the Fire Station a cast member registers you for the game. Your Magic Band or ticket is the key to unlock the game around the park. There is one game master who is responsible for unlocking the game, but multiple people can play on one Magic Band or ticket.
Each person in the group gets a set of Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom cards and the game master gets a map. If it is your first time playing the game, a cast member takes you to a training station. This lets you get the feel of using Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom cards to combat the villains.
When the cast member activates the game you are assigned a mission in one of four areas of Magic Kingdom: Adventureland, Liberty Square/Frontierland, Main Street, U.S.A., or Fantasyland.
How Do You Complete A Mission?
Your mission begins at the symbol on the map and part of Magic Kingdom park the cast member assigns you. There are multiple portals in each of these areas marked on the map with each portal having a special symbol.
When you get to the first portal tap your ticket card or Magic Band on the lock located nearby. This activates the portal and keeps track of your Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom game progress.
A video comes to life in the first portal and either Merlin or another character warns you of the upcoming challenge you face. Each portal after that will awaken with a villain or henchman to thwart your attempts to save the crystal piece.
The villain tries to stop you, but you use a Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom card to cast a spell. To cast a spell, hold a card up to the portal and your special spell stops the villain. Sometimes you have to use the special crest on the back of the Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom card to perform special spells.
Once your spell defeats the villain, you are given the next portal for your mission. Once you have completed several small battles against henchmen you then fight the main villain for the area. After defeating the head villain you are given the option to continue playing Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom missions elsewhere in the park.
How Much Does Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom Cost?
Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom is free for all park guests. You just need to stop by the Fire Station to start the game and get spell cards. Each time you come back to the Magic Kingdom you need to stop first at the Fire Station to begin a new mission and get additional spell cards.
How Long Does Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom Take?
A full Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom mission usually takes about 20 minutes. On days where lots of people are playing, it can take longer as you wait for your turn at the portals. Even if you are at the same portal as someone else, they may have a different interaction than you do.
You can play multiple missions back to back which will take longer. I usually limit my daughter to one or two per Magic Kingdom day so we still have time for rides and character interactions.
Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom Cards
Each time you stop at the Fire Station to begin a mission you get a pack of Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom cards. The more you play the bigger your spell deck gets. There are a lot of common cards, so don’t be surprised if you end up with duplicates.
Each card has the Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom symbol on the back. The front of the card has a character picture and spell name. The card also shows what type of spell it is, for example an animal spell, and then the damage the spell will do against the villain or henchman.
Tips For Playing Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom
Get Cards For Everyone In Your Group
There is one game master who unlocks the portals, but multiple people in your group can play at once. This means everyone who goes to the Fire Station with the game master can get a set of Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom cards. This is a great way to get a better assortment of spell cards, especially when you first begin the game.
Trade Cards Outside Main Street Fire Station
If you get multiple packs with a group or from playing several times, you will end up with duplicate spell cards. A great way to diversify your spell cards is to find a cast member outside the Fire Station. This cast member has a big book of spell cards that you can trade with them.
There are a couple of spell card trading rules. You can not trade in a card that is already on the same page of the book. Another rule is cast members usually limit you to two trades. This means you can only trade two cards at a time. Because of this limit make sure you fully evaluate the options before committing to a trade.
Use The Same Magic Band Each Time You Play
Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom is designed so it can be played over several visits. At first we couldn’t figure out why it seemed we were doing the same missions over and over without progressing in the story.
After asking a cast member we learned that game progress is stored on your ticket or Magic Band. If you use a different Magic Band each time you start a game all of your previous activity disappears. After learning this we now have one Magic Band that we always use for Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom.
Pick Up Special Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom Cards During Special Events
At Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party and Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party there are special event Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom spell cards. You can not get these cards outside of these ticketed events.
After 4pm and once you have your special event wristband go to the Fire Station. Cast members outside the entrance will give one of these special cards to each person with a wristband.
Some Of The Portals Are Tricky To Find
In general the map is easy to follow. However, there are a few difficult to find portals. For example, one portal on Main Street, U.S.A. is inside a shop hidden among some artwork. If you are having trouble finding a portal ask a cast member or look for the bronze Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom plaque set into the ground.
Final Thoughts On Playing Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom at Disney World
We didn’t get into playing Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom until a couple of years ago, but now it is something we do at least once on each trip. This free game is a great way to explore parts of Magic Kingdom you may have overlooked. Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom is also a great activity when you have a bit of downtime between FastPasses or when crowds are high and you want a break from attractions.
