Disney World Genie+ Guide

Introduced in October 2021 at Disney World, Disney Genie+ is a new service designed to make the most of your Disney World day. While Genie is free, Disney Genie+ is a pay service designed to replace FastPasses. Disney Genie+ gives guests access to Lightning Lanes that skip standby lines to reduce overall wait times.

Essential Genie+ Vocabulary

A pink and purple sky above Expedition Everest at Animal Kingdom

Before we talk more about Genie+ I think it’s important to understand the terms for the new system. Disney’s naming is extremely confusing and easily misunderstood.

These are the five main terms I want to cover: Genie, Genie+, Lightning Lane, Individual Lightning Lane, and Genie Tip Board which despite the name similarities are all different.

Disney Genie is a free service included on the Disney World My Disney Experience app. It’s not particularly helpful in my opinion, except for the dining section of the Disney Genie Tip Board.

Genie+ is a pay service that provides access to Lightning Lane attractions at each Disney World theme park.

Lightning Lane

Genie+ Lightning Lane (LL) attractions are included in the Genie+ fee, and guests book multiple lanes per day. Lightning Lane reservations give guests a one-hour return window where they can skip the traditional standby queue.

Disney Genie+ Lightning Lane return times are automatically assigned for the next available opening. This means you can’t pick a specific return window for Genie+ Lightning Lanes.

Individual Lightning Lane

Purchase Individual Lightning Lane attraction access for an additional fee. There are usually two popular Individual Lightning Lane attractions at each park.

With Individual Lightning Lanes you purchase a specific return time to skip the often lengthy traditional queue. Individual Lightning Lane attractions allow guests to choose a preferred return time.

Disney Genie Tip Board

Disney Genie Tip Board is free for all guests. Access Disney Genie Tip Board from the My Disney Experience app main menu or by clicking “My Day” at the top right of the home screen.

The Disney Genie Tip Board Experiences tab is an important landing page for Disney Genie. Find current wait times for attractions even without purchasing Genie+.

Guests with Genie+ check and book Lightning Lane reservations here on the Tip Board Experiences tab. Purchase Individual Lightning Lane attractions here, too.

The Disney Genie Tip Board Dining tab is a great way to see which table service restaurants have same-day walk-up or reservation availability. Also check here for how fast a quick service mobile order can be ready.

What’s The Difference Between Disney Genie+ and Individual Lighting Lanes?

Disney Genie+ is a pay service where you choose Lightning Lane return times throughout the day. Several Lighting Lane options are available for each Disney World theme park and are included with Disney Genie+.

However, Individual Lightning Lanes are purchased separately from Genie+ with a per ride per person price. Fees for Individual Lightning Lane attractions vary by ride and day with some around $7 per person and others $15 per person.

How Does Disney Genie+ Work?

After purchasing Disney Genie+, choose reservations from a list of included Lightning Lane attractions. Lightning Lanes provide a specific one-hour return time where you skip the traditional standby queue, similar to the former FastPass system.

Unfortunately, unlike FastPass you can’t choose from multiple Lightning Lane return times. Only the next available Lightning Lane window appears as an option which makes working around dining reservations and other plans difficult.

How Much Does Disney World Genie+ Cost?

Disney World Genie+ costs $15 (plus tax) per day per guest. This comes to $15.98 per person per day for Genie+.

How Do I Buy Disney World Genie+?

Purchasing Genie+ via the My Disney Experience App is not as obvious as expected. Open the app, click “My Day”, and then scroll down to a purple bar that says “Take Today to the Next Level”.

Purchase screen for Disney World Genie+

From here follow the prompts to purchase Genie+ for your group.

Important tip: Be careful when making your Genie+ purchase. The system automatically includes anyone linked on your My Disney Experience app who also has park reservations that day. I was able to unselect a friend and purchase Disney Genie+ for just my immediate group, but if I wasn’t paying attention it would have been a costly mistake.

Now that you purchased Genie+ choose your preferred theme park for the day. Click on “Tip Board” and a list of attractions, wait times, and Lightning Lane return times populate. Make your first Lightning Lane selection and start your day.

Make your next Disney Genie+ Lightning Lane selection after tapping into the first Lightning Lane attraction, two hours after your last selection, or two hours after park opening, whichever occurs first.

How Do Individual Lightning Lane Attractions Work?

Individual Lightning Lane (ILL) attractions are not included with Disney Genie+. Instead Individual Lightning Lane attractions are purchased per person per attraction with variable pricing.

Guests can purchase Individual Lightning Lane attractions with or without Genie+. There are usually two popular Individual Lightning Lane attractions per park.

There is a limit of two ILL purchases per person per day, and the price is a deterrent to buying more anyway.

When Do I Purchase Disney World Genie+?

Until June 8, 2022 resort and off-site guests with multi-day tickets can buy Genie+ ahead of time for the duration of their stay/ticket. Or guests can choose to purchase Disney Genie+ one day at a time beginning at midnight on their park day.

Disney World Annual Passholders are only allowed to purchase Genie+ one day at a time starting at midnight on their park reservation date.

Beginning June 8, Disney World Genie+ is only available to purchase on the day of your visit regardless of ticket type. There’s also interesting new wording about Genie+ being “subject to availability”.

From Disney Parks Blog: This means that, moving forward, whether you have an Annual Pass, multi- or single-day ticket, you may only purchase Disney Genie+ service on the day of your visit via the app, one day at a time, subject to availability.

We’ll update as more information on these changes becomes available.

When Can I Make Genie+ Lightning Lane Selections For My Disney World Park Day?

All guests can reserve their first Disney Genie+ Lightning Lane selection at 7am. The second Genie+ Lightning Lane (LL) selection of the day is made either after tapping into the first LL attraction OR two hours after the park opened, whichever comes first.

What Time Do I Buy Disney World Individual Lightning Lane Reservations?

While many perks of staying on-site at Disney World have disappeared, the ability to buy Individual Lightning Lane access earlier than off-site guests is a big advantage right now.

Disney World resort guests purchase Individual Lightning Lane reservations at 7am while off-site guests must wait until park opening to buy Individual Lightning Lanes. This means popular Individual Lightning Lane attractions are often sold out within moments of park opening which puts off-site guests at a disadvantage.

Can I Use Disney Genie+ Lightning Lanes Multiple Times For An Attraction?

Disney Genie+ Lightning Lane experiences are limited to one per day. That means if you choose Soarin’ early in the day you can’t choose it again, even if there is availability. However, you can use the standby queue if you want to re-ride an attraction or see a show again.

Can I Buy Individual Lightning Lane Attractions Without Disney Genie+?

Genie+ is not connected to Individual Lightning Lane access. This means you can buy Individual Lightning Lane access without buying Genie+.

In fact, for some Disney World visitors this is the best value. A smart rope-drop plan plus strategic Individual Lightning Lane purchases can make for a great day.

Is Genie+ The Same As FastPass?

No, FastPasses allowed guests to reserve three attractions per day at one park for free. You chose a specific return time which made scheduling FastPasses easier. And because it was done ahead of time you knew you’d have at least three skip-the-line experiences plus the option to grab more after those were used.

Disney World recently updated the language on Genie+ Lightning Lanes stating: “On average, guests can enter 2 to 3 attractions or experiences per day using the Lightning Lane entrance if the first selection is made early in the day”.

This means if the parks are crowded or you lose track of what time to make additional reservations you will end up with less Genie+ Lightning Lane reservations than FastPasses. For those used to FastPass, Genie+ is more frustrating and feels less valuable.

Guests who are new to Disney World overall seem less upset with Genie+. It’s certainly better than waiting in every standby queue.

Disney Genie+ Lightning Lane Tips:

Spaceship Earth sparkles in the sunlight at Epcot

Set An Alarm

Select new Genie+ Lighting Lane reservations after using a Lightning Lane pass OR when two hours have passed since your last selection. An exception to this rule is the first Lightning Lane selection of the day. A second Lightning Lane reservation is only allowed after lane use or two hours after park opening.

This nuance often surprises people. Unless you read the Genie+ fine print you’d expect the second selection two hours after making the first reservation, not two hours after park opening.

Setting a phone alarm alerts you when your next lightning lane selection is available on the app. This reminder maximizes the number of Lightning Lane reservations during your Disney World day since it’s easy to lose track of time without an alarm.

Choose Your First Genie+ Lightning Lane Wisely

There are two main ways to use your first Lightning Lane selection of the day: high value, late time or medium value, early time. Each system has pros and cons so I’ll share some of our experiences which I hope help.

Medium Value, Early Lightning Lane Return Time

When strategy testing this technique I purchased Disney World Genie+ for Epcot on a day the park opened at 10am. At 7am I could choose either Soarin’ at 10:45am or Test Track at 2:35pm.

If you choose Test Track in this situation your next Lightning Lane selection is at 12pm, two hours after park opening. If you choose Soarin’ you get another Lightning Lane selection as soon as you tap into Soarin’ at 10:45am.

I rope dropped Epcot with early entry so I was able to ride both Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure and Frozen Ever After by the time my Soarin’ Lightning Lane window opened. Unfortunately, by the time I tapped into Soarin’ there was no Lightning Lane availability for Test Track. Instead I grabbed one for Living with the Land which I immediately used as I exited Soarin’.

I kept checking over several hours and was able to snag a Test Track Lightning Lane late in the day. My gamble paid off this day, but could have easily failed another time. If you really have your heart set on an attraction I think the high value, late return time strategy is the safer option.

High Value, Late Lightning Lane Return Time

Testing this technique, I again purchased Disney World Genie+ for Epcot opening at 10am. At 7am I snagged a Test Track Lightning Lane for 4:30-5:30pm.

Since Epcot opened at 10am and I had not used my Test Track Lightning Lane, I had to wait 2 hours for my next selection. At 12pm I was able to grab a 2:40-3:40pm Soarin’ Lightning Lane.

While it was good to have both Soarin’ and Test Track Lightning Lane return times locked up, it was frustrating that by 2pm I hadn’t used a single Lightning Lane. And LL availability that late in the afternoon was starting to disappear.

I did grab a couple more Lightning Lane attractions during the afternoon, but popular rides like Spaceship Earth had late return times which might not work for families with little kids.

Purchase Disney World Genie+ Daily

Cinderella Castle adorned in 50th Anniversary decorations

Not all Disney World parks have the same number of Genie+ attractions which means some theme parks are a better value than others. For example, Animal Kingdom has 11 Lightning Lane attractions and just five are rides. This feels like a worse value than Magic Kingdom which has twenty LL attractions, fifteen of which are rides.

Plus when you purchase Disney World Genie+ by individual day you have the option to try it out with limited expense. If you buy it for one park day and love it, then you can easily buy it for the remaining park days. If you hate it, skip Disney World Genie+ and buy Individual Lightning Lane access or a fun souvenir.

This advice is valid for tickets purchased before June 8, 2022. All tickets purchased June 8, 2022 or later only have the option of adding Disney World Genie+ on the day of your visit subject to availability.

Disney PhotoPass Lenses Are Fun

These lenses are included when you purchase Disney World Genie+. Similar to what you’d expect with SnapChat there are over a dozen fun photo filters.

Although you can use the Disney World Genie+ PhotoPass Lenses up to 45 days after your purchase a handful of lenses are location dependent. Make sure you swipe through to see which ones are only available in the parks to maximize this cute perk of Disney World Genie+.

Is Disney World Genie+ Worth It?

Colorful decor in it's a small world queue

This is a question I have struggled with since Disney World Genie+ launched. The short answer is Disney World Genie+ is worth it sometimes, but not always.

No Budget? No Problem!

If you aren’t concerned about expense there isn’t much downside to buying Disney World Genie+ for your vacation. If you’ve got the budget and won’t be frustrated by snagging only two or three Lightning Lane attractions per day, go ahead and buy Genie+.

For those without budget concerns, buying Genie+ and Individual Lightning Lanes is the most expensive option, but reduces wait times letting you do more during a Disney World vacation.

I’d Like To Minimize Disney World Genie+ Expenses

When Should I Buy Animal Kingdom Genie+?

For Animal Kingdom the answer is almost never. For parks with limited Genie+ Lightning Lane attractions, like Animal Kingdom, a good rope drop strategy is probably all you need.

Animal Kingdom has eight Genie+ Lightning Lane attractions and only four are rides. This makes Animal Kingdom Genie+ the worst value of any Disney World theme park.

When Should I Buy Hollywood Studios Genie+?

Hollywood Studios is an extremely popular park where Genie+ can help, especially if you have a child tall enough to ride exciting attractions like Tower of Terror. Wait times get long by mid-day, but eight of the thirteen Disney World Genie+ Lightning Lanes are rides providing a decent value.

Most days I suggest buying Genie+ at Hollywood Studios. The only exception is if you rope drop on a low crowd day. In that case you may be able to hit several attractions without buying Genie+.

When Should I Buy Epcot Genie+?

Once Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure joins the Genie+ Lightning Lane options buying Genie+ for Epcot becomes a better deal. Epcot Genie+ will be more useful on low crowd days, but still helpful when the park is packed making this a must buy for most guests.

Pair Genie+ with an Individual Lightning Lane for Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind for an exciting day of attractions.

When Should I Buy Magic Kingdom Genie+?

Magic Kingdom Genie+ is the best value with twenty Lightning Lane attractions, sixteen of which are rides. Even if you don’t snag all the high value LL, Disney Genie+ can provide decent value by skipping wait times for middle tier attractions and character meet and greets.

I recommend buying Magic Kingdom Genie+ for most days unless you are staying at a Deluxe Resort or Deluxe Villa and plan on attending Extended Evening Theme Park hours.

Final Thoughts on Disney World Genie+

Overall, Disney World Genie+ is less useful than the old FastPass system. However, Genie+ makes for a less frustrating theme park experience when used strategically, especially on high crowd days.
